Running a political campaign is expensive.
If a Millionaire/Billionaire runs a political campaign, they have a HUGE advantage against a potentially better candidate without the financial means.
Oregon will help to make it so a person with brilliant ideas but much less money will have a better chance at running and succeeding for elected office.
Few Americans can afford to donate to political campaigns. That often makes politicians dependent upon special-interest donors. These donors often expect something in return for giving huge sums of money to a candidates campaign. This is where the problem begins and the potential for corruptible influence lies.
Public Funded Elections needs to be implemented.
Running like a Millionaire is a program that offers every voter in Oregon a small credit they can use to make a political donation with no out-of-pocket expense. Something like a Democracy Voucher. Candidates are only eligible to receive these credits from voters if they agree to fundraise solely from individual small donors and if they have not spent $1million or more of their own money to get themselves elected. This will help to make politicians dependent on voters instead of big-money interests.
This is Oregon's way to even the playing field.
Running like a Millionaire will also empower political action committees that only take donations from small donors, giving everyday people a stronger voice in our elections.
